This incredible work of art was made over the span of several months by Huichol artisans from a small community within the Sierra Madre mountains of Jalisco

The painting is absolutely superb with hundreds of extremely fine lines and patterns inspired by Zapotec symbols

The amount of work that went into creating this piece is huge and took close to one year which started with curing the wood

The facial expression and proportions along with the bright vibrant colors really make this piece stand out

This striped cat wood carving also known as "alebrije" was carved and painted in the small town of San Martin Tilcajete in Oaxaca Mexico by the Hernandez family which is one of the 7 original families who popularized the art of wood-carving

drying and ultimately painting the bat

After this process the wood is allowed to dry for a few days before being worked on by the wood carver
